The road north

The road was never the easy one

Brian's story begins in northern Wisconsin, where work in his family's pulpwood logging business introduced him early to machinery, land and physical work. He followed that aptitude north, beginning gold mining in Alaska in 1981 and later working in the Yukon alongside his brother Loren.

Beyond the yield

More than gold

The story's real value is not simply what came out of the ground. It is the decades of work, the relationships built around it, the risks taken together and the freedom Brian found in choosing an unconventional life.

The man behind the memoir

Meet Brian

Brian Johnson built his life around work that demanded judgment, endurance and a willingness to go where opportunity led. From Wisconsin logging country to Alaska and the Yukon, the same road that led him toward gold eventually gave him a story worth putting on the page.
